Pelican Bowl
The
sculptural Pelican Bowl is not designed to be a utilitarian item.
It is a hybridized design incorporating the pelican motif. This
sculpture is a mixture of high-tech
stainless steel and natural basalt stone, marked with the artists
mark.
This sculpture is completely of contemporary origin. I carved the
stone bowl using a pneumatic hammer with a carbide bit and a high-speed
grinder with a diamond wheel. The outside of the stone has been
left
with it's naturally formed contours.
The
Pelican Bowl Sculpture is cradled within a burnished stainless steel form.
The stainless has been tooled with a coarse sandpaper disk resulting in
a contemporary and permanent finish.
The
dark basalt bowl has a rich, vesciular texture. It is quite a dense
material eventhough there are many gaseous voids in the matrix. The
stone is quite hard and difficult to work.
