New
Rockfish
Recently
I have produced several Rockfish as commission orders. These are presented
here as part of the on-line portfolio.
The
Bonito is a fast moving pelagic species. It associates in large schools
and is similar to tuna.
This
sculpture is made from a natural stone encased in a stainless steel fish
body. The stainless is burnished with a rotary stone tool. The lines
are tool marks which shine from different views.
Dark
Snapper is a unique piece within the series of Rockfish Sculpture.
I have found that representation of some types of fish just work better
than others. The snapper is one of my favorite subjects for rockfish.
This sculpture is 31 inches long.
Tuna
Metallica is a new sculpture commissioned by Riffe International for their
upcoming trade show in New Orleans (January 2001). The piece is 42" in
length. It has an epoxy-glass body which is clad with rivited sheet
metal panels. Top is copper, fins and midline are brass and the lower portion
is stainless steel. To keep it looking "metallic" and free from dark oxidations
it is painted with a high grade automotive clear urethane sealer.
The
next image is a White Rock Triggerfish. This sculpture is a commission
through Trios Gallery in Solana Beach, California. Triggerfish have a fearless
attitude, maybe it's just the pugnacious jawline. I have caught them fishing
and had them break the hard steel hook in half with their bite. All that
returns is the eye and shank of the hook.
In
reality, triggerfish do not have feet that allow them to stand. I just
added those components to provide some forward support to this 35 lb. sculpture.
I guess you could call it "artistic licence". Length = 36", White Rock
