Recovery - Giant Sea Bass (Stereolepis gigas) 2007
Fabrication of Sculpture 1
For me, the process of building this large sculpture was very interesting. It gave me a chance to utilize technology and proceedures that I do not often get a chance to work with. Usually, I work in relatively small scale, managable size objects which I can hand-build. In the case of this public art sculpture, I had to use 'industrial processes'.  From the drawing to the final placement of the object, there were many stages. Careful planning was used at every step of the way.

Please note that the sculpture started with the drawing process. I used my own original photo of a Giant Sea Bass as basic reference for the fish. The drawing was done in Adobe Illustrator in seperate layers, each of which was exported as a file to be cut with numerically controlled laser by Angeles Steel Services Company. They really did a great job. I chose them because I knew the work was well-within the capability of their equipment. My contact was Chuck Famulare. He advised me to use laser cutting rather than plasma because of increased accuracy. I took his advice and am really glad that I did. The cuts were perfect. Fit and accuracy was excellent through the entire 10' length of the half inch thick steel plates that they cut. I was very pleased with their cutting service.
After the steel was cut, I transported the components to my own small studio.
