1975-1983 Work Association with Buckminster Fuller
One of the more exciting moments was the installation of the unique geodesic dome of Buckminster Fuller
design. This structure was known as the Fly's Eye Dome. It was 50' in diameter
and elevated 10' off the ground. It served Los Angeles as an information
center during the Bicentennial of the city.
During my 10 year association with
Buckminster Fuller, I was responsible for creation of 3 larger Fuller domes
which had previously not been built. The Fly's Eye Dome series included a
24' and 50' diameter molded fiberglass shells. The 50' dome was used to house
a time-line graphic which illustrated the development of the City of Los
Angeles during the last 200 years. This structure was a focal point for the
city and provided an information center at Pershing square during the bicentennial
year of 1981.
Subsequently design work was initiated with Buckminster Fuller
on a structure called Deresonated Tensegrity. It was to be a 50' dome covered
with a 60' dome. This structure was to be built under the guidance of Norman
Foster and Partners in London. Due to the death of Buckminster Fuller in
1983, this project was cancelled. However continued work was done with dome
designer Brad Twoomey of Humbolt California. A 24' Fly's Eye dome was fabricated
and fitted out. This structure became the basis of a travelling exhibit of
Fuller's work in Europe.
